Affirmations 101: Your Guide to Happier Thoughts

Do you consider yourself a smooth talker? Or do you stumble over your words, your brain moving faster than your mouth?

Either way – what if I told you that you could talk your way into a healthier, wealthier, overall happier life? Sounds like crazy voodoo or maybe just hippy hullabaloo right? Fortunately I have science on my side as I tell you – affirmations DO work.

What is an affirmation?

An affirmation is simply a statement or declaration that something is valid and true.

Let’s say that when you pass by the hallway mirror on your way to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, you notice out loud, “My hair is a mess!”

Or perhaps when you are loading up the family car with groceries, you might mutter, “I spend a small fortune every week feeding these kids!”

You may not know it, but those are affirmations, albeit negative ones. An example of a positive affirmation is something like “I deserve to be happy!”

How do affirmations work?

It starts by becoming more mindful of your words, thoughts, and actions. When you catch yourself thinking or saying something negative, stop yourself. Find a way to put a positive spin on it, even when you don’t want to.

As you train your brain to be positive through your affirmations, it will become natural, and it will influence your life in all areas, including your thoughts. You will begin to manifest in your life what you envision to be true in your life, and you give affirmation to what you believe to be true.

Developing your own affirmations may feel uncomfortable at first, but as soon as you get used to the idea of speaking out positive truth, it will be a natural part of your daily routine.

When you catch a glimpse of that unruly hair, quickly exclaim, “I have such beautiful, healthy hair.”

And as you stock your kitchen, “I am so blessed to be able to provide so well for my family!”

Depending on what you hope to accomplish through positive affirmations, you will be able to tailor the phrases to benefit you individually. Identifying where you have weakness in thought patterns is a great place to start. If you are hard on yourself in a particular area, or if you are struggling with something specific, combat the tendency to be critical of yourself by immediately telling yourself what you would like to see, as though it has already happened that way.

You are amazing!

A big part of using positive affirmations is choosing to believe you are significant and you are valuable. You will be amazed at how dramatically this alone will change your life. If you are reminding yourself all day how valuable you are, your decisions will be made through a different lens, your reactions to negative circumstance will not be made out of fear, and you will develop a deeper sense of security in your emotional and physical well-being.

You may have read it, but a couple years ago I wrote a post on how I lived to blog, but I was scared it wouldn’t amount to anything. Regardless of that fear, I kept telling myself I was going to make it happen – I would find my freedom, quit my job, and be the work-at-home mom I’d always wanted to be.

And guess what?

It happened. In fact, just two months after writing that post, I was making more than enough money to quit my job and now work from home as a professional blogger and efficiency strategist, helping other bloggers master the art of bringing in profits without pressure.

So when doing your own affirmations, think of it as a narrator in your life, reading the script as you live it out. If the script says that you are successful and happy, you act out the narrative believing that it is true, before it happens. You tell yourself what to believe, so that it will happen.

Tips on positivity

There are a few helpful things to keep in mind as you start on your journey towards a positive, healthy lifestyle full of new words, phrases and initially awkward declarations.

First, be grateful for who you are and what you can accomplish.

Second, don’t ever compare yourself to others.

Finally, don’t judge yourself or others.

As you implement these simple guidelines, you will be successfully affirming yourself with positivity in no time. You can begin using your positive affirmations to influence outcomes in all kinds of situations.

You listen to yourself more than you think! (And so do your kids!)

Usually what comes out of your mouth is a good indicator of what you believe. And guess what? If you’re saying it, your kids are hearing it. So even if you’re only directing negative self-talk at yourself, you’re still teaching your children that it’s okay to disrespect yourself and your surroundings in such a way.

If you believe you are not good enough, you will voice that in a number of ways, and in turn, you’ll produce less than stellar results. You can use positive affirmation to turn the tables, change your mind about what you believe and get positive results. After practicing positive affirmations regularly, your thought patterns will change and you will discover that your beliefs now have changed. The affirmations that are released from your mouth will now appropriately indicate your beliefs, and will be manifested in your life.

Remember that positive affirmations are a tool to re-train your mind into believing what you are telling it to believe. When you are speaking, pay attention to the words. Convince yourself that what you are saying is true. Believe that you are who you say you are through your affirmations.

Don’t have time for affirmations?

That was always my excuse – “ugh! It’s just so hard to remember!” or “There’s no time in the mornings!”

Sound familiar?

Yeah, thought so. That’s why I made it a habit to do affirmations WITH my children. If you struggle to believe in the power of affirmations, make it a point to include your children and watch as positive thinking becomes a family habit. There’s little better you can teach your children than to think positive.

Here are a few examples of positive affirmations to influence your day:

  • I trust myself to make great choices
  • I am unique and significant
  • I am totally capable of providing well for my family

  • I am a source of great comfort, peace and joy for my family
  • I am creative and resourceful
  • I attract interesting people and amazing opportunities, because I am interesting and amazing
  • I am calm and relaxed when I interact with others
  • I study and comprehend what I read easily
  • I am surrounded by love
  • I have the means to experience life as I choose
  • My body is healthy and functioning as it should

As you habitually remind yourself of all that you are through positive affirmations, you will achieve far greater success in your life — physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally and financially.

You will thrive in your abundantly blessed life, and everyone around you will want to know your secret.

Lemon water


From the very beginning of my weight loss journey, back in 2012, one of the first daily changes I made was implementing some morning lemon water. This was easy and cheap to do. How neat is that?

With just a couple dollars, I buy a sack of lemons every week at the grocery store. I use my handy dandy citrus squeezer to fill up mason jars with lemon water. Every morning, I open the fridge and grab one.

Lemon water is the first thing I drink every single morning and I can attest it is better than coffee. I still drink coffee but not on a daily basis anymore. I have seen tons of improvement in my overall health since implementing this simple, easy and tasty change.

Oh golly! I love chia seeds. At first having heard of them, I was a tad weirded out. I also thought by the hipster-sounding name that it would only be available at high-end health food stores. I was so wrong. You can find chia seeds everywhere, even ordering through Amazon and having them delivered right to your doorstep!

Essential oils

I have been using essential oils for a very long time now, about six to seven years. They have changed absolutely everything about the way I see healing. When I get a cut, I don’t reach for the typical “first-aid kit”. I grab one of my essential oil roll-on blends and heal myself naturally.

I am living proof that using high-grade therapeutic essential oils is a great way to heal your body inexpensively and rather quickly, too. If you don’t feel you have easy access to good quality essential oils, they are also available for purchase on Amazon.

The Benefits of Decluttering

The benefits of decluttering are important to keep in mind, but it’s no surprise when we let it slide. That said, whenever the New Year approaches (aka the first “I’ll start Monday…” excuse of the year) I think forward to what I want to accomplish this year. Obviously my big goal for the year is making a success of this blog so that I can stay at home with my children, but another big one is to finally declutter our home.

We bought our house two years ago and while I can say we’re “unpacked”, unpacked mostly means “shtuff shoved into the spare bedroom.” I have two weeks off for the holidays and I plan to make the most of them. It’s my goal to be clutter-free before the new year, one final resolution for this year if you will.

Being clutter-free is important for a number of reasons, especially if you have young children who are at eye-level with the clutter. I can almost guarantee that if you have toddlers, their tendency to tantrum is directly related to the amount of clutter they’re surrounded by.

That said, if decluttering falls to you, then I very much encourage you to focus on YOU.

Decluttering will go a long way to help your mental and physical health.

Living clutter-free means…

Less stress. Less stress means a stronger immune system which means less doctor visits (and bills).

Making money

Making money selling stuff you no longer need. I have a post on how to hold a successful garage sale, but there are many other avenues to explore. Resale groups on Facebook are a favorite of mine, but there’s also Amazon (great for reselling books), Ebay, and Craigslist.

Just pause for a moment and think about how much time and energy you spend dealing with the clutter. Exhausting, isn’t it? By taking the time to declutter, you’ll not only have less stress ,but you’ll have far more time. More free time means either more time with your families or more time to find ways to live thrifty– a win either way.

Letting go of the past

Many of us are nostalgic to a fault (myself included!), but the more that we hang on to, the less room we have to keep bits of new memories. By letting go, we’re able to focus more on the future and lead a more purpose-driven life.

Motivation to declutter more

Being motivated to tend to other parts of our lives. Once the house is clean, I know I’m always then eager to clean out our minivan. Similarly, once our living space is decluttered, we are then inspired to “declutter” other areas (whether they be physical or mental).

Make room for the good things coming your way and you’ll find you have even more energy to do other things that’ll keep you moving forward.

Have VS Need

Knowing what you have versus knowing what you need. Can I share a bit of an embarrassing story with you?

The morning before my son’s birthday party, I received a bulk toilet paper order from Amazon. Due to the mad chaos that was trying to ensure the house was “party ready”, I ended up tossing the box into our spare room instead of putting it away like I should have. When it came time to needing it, I knew I had it, but had no idea where I’d put it. Time and money were both spent before I stumbled across the box in the spare room.

Mental energy

When you remove the clutter from your home, you grant yourself the energy and space to focus on what’s truly important in your life. Clutter, even just a small amount, can be mentally draining. When you’re already overwhelmed or overworked, losing the stress that is clutter can make a world of difference.

Clever Ways to Use Mason Jars

The uses for mason jars are innumerable! I love to collect glass jars, specifically mason jars. Weird to some, maybe, but they’re just so incredibly useful! Now I know I’ve written on why you should declutter to save money, so maybe you’re thinking “Amber, I don’t need anything else!” but seriously there are just so many amazing ways to use these jars!

Build a window sill herb garden

Fresh herbs when you need them means saving time and money! This is especially easy if you already grow herbs in your summer garden. Before the first frost, take a snipping from each herb just below a joint. Put each herb in a jar and fill with just enough water to cover the joint. Swap out the water every few days and once roots appear, transfer to dirt.

You can take your gardening on a budget one step further by using yogurt cups or other used receptacles. Poke a few holes in the bottom, fill with dirt, plant your herbs, and set back in the mason jars. Mist every week or as needed, just be very careful not to over-water.

Make oatmeal jars

Oatmeal jars make for a perfect easy breakfast! I love how simple these are to modify and change up any time I find myself getting bored, there’s hundreds of recipes to be found online and it’s easy to figure out just how to make them to best suit you.

My favorite recipe is to sauté bananas in some coconut oil and brown sugar then fill a pint-size mason jar halfway with oatmeal, top with the bananas, add in some walnuts, and fill the jar with almond milk. Give it a good shake and let it set overnight. You can make five at a time to ensure breakfast is ready every day of the week.

Put leftover coffee to use

Pour some into an ice cube tray to freeze and the rest into a mason jar to stick in the fridge. In the morning, add the coffee cubes to the mason jar, pour in some heavy whipping cream or other favorite coffee add-ins, and you’ve got iced coffee ready to go! Yum!

Perfect for a gift exchange

Did you forget about the Secret Santa exchange at work? Grab a mason jar, toss in some hot cocoa mix and marshmallows, tie a ribbon around it and voila! A cute and easy gift that anyone will love. Don’t forget to grab a cute Hallmark greeting card from the Dollar Store!

Learn to can

Take advantage of the cheap summer produce and stock up to ensure you have access to healthy options all year round. Personally I love pickled foods (like seriously – my mouth waters at the idea of anything pickled!) but you can also make family-friendly treats, like crockpot apple butter!

Use them to store your homemade beauty products

I love to use apple cider vinegar as a facial toner and coconut oil as a moisturizer so I keep both stored in mason jars in my bathroom. This is also a great route to take if you’re into essential oils and need an air tight container for any blends you make.

Buy in bulk and use mason jars to store things like loose leaf tea, grains, sugar, etc. Bonus: glass jars are critter-proof!

Make your own household cleaning products

Vinegar makes for a great cleaner and mason jars are perfect to store those solutions!

An easy (and great smelling) cleaner is to:

  • Fill your mason jar with orange peels, or any citrus you enjoy.
  • Cover the peels with vinegar, seal, and then store in a dark place for 2-4 weeks.
  • Strain the peels, add to a spray bottle, and you’re good to go!

Just like any cleaning products, though, make sure you label them properly and keep them out of reach of the children.

From holding pens to store paper clips, mason jars can go a long way in helping your work area stay organized.

Make your own cold brew coffee

Toss 1/3rd of a cup of coarse coffee grounds into a jar filled with 2.5 cups of water. Sit in the fridge for 8-24 hours (depending on how strong you want it) then strain with either a cheese cloth or a tea infuser and coffee filter. Way cheaper than going to a coffee shop!

Keep your crafting and art supplies organized with mason jars

Just like you can do with your office, mason jars are great at helping you keep things like paint brushes, beads, glue sticks, and such quite organized. The smaller ones also make for great containers for DIY finger paints for the kids!

Salad jars

Remember those McDonald Salad Shakers from the early 2000s? Yum.

You can make them yourself and make five ahead of time so you’re set for the week, just make sure you put the dressing at the bottom and the greens at the top (add your usual mix-ins, like sesame seeds or cheese, in between).

Don’t toss those dandelion flowers your son picked for you! Grab a mason jar and display them proudly.

Mason jar tupperware

Use mason jars instead of plastic tupperware to store and tote leftovers. They’ll last longer than your traditional plastic tupperware and it’s so much better for the environment!

Make a rootbeer float

This is seriously an amazing dessert and with far less sugar than a traditional rootbear float (which is especially great if you’re just starting a keto diet!) Fill the bottom of the pint-sized mason jar with heavy whipping cream. Cover and shake for 30 seconds then slowly add your root beer. Trust me on this – it’s AMAZING.

Make your own mason jar candles

These work great as presents or for your own use. Hearth and Vine has a great tutorial to make mason jar oil candle lanterns!

Or make your own hanging lanterns…

Punch two side-by-side holes in the top of your mason jar and thread wire through. Drop in a battery-operated tea light and you’re good to go with a beautiful hanging lantern, perfect for frugal Halloween decor or any time of the year!

Use mason jars instead of disposable cups

Not only is this better for the environment, but you can use a cupcake liner to keep bugs out of your drink. Simply use the jar’s outer lid to secure the cupcake liner and then poke a straw through. This is especially great if you have young children prone to spilling.

Use smaller glass jars to store your spices

You can even add magnets to the tops to keep them on the side of your fridge and take back some of your much-needed cabinet space.

Create a time capsule with your kids

Have them gather up a few things representative of this time period and seal them in a mason jar. Decide on when you’ll open it back up and then pick a spot in the backyard to bury it.

Have some fun with the kids and make your own butter.

Just add some heavy whipping cream to a glass jar and shake, shake, shake! Keep rockin’ it for a few minutes and you’ll have whipping cream, keep going for a bit longer and you’ll end up with whipped, delicious, easy-to-spread butter.

Use them to celebrate the holiday season.

Make snow globes with your little ones by gluing a cute scene or decor to the inside of the mason jar lid. Fill the jar with a bottle of clear Elmers glue, about a quarter of a small jar of glitter, and water. Hot glue the lid to the glass and you’re good to go!

Get a little fancy at your next dinner party…

Serve individual desserts in some of the smaller jars and you’ll really wow your dinner guests. You can bake cakes directly inside them or fill with ice cream, set out bowls of toppings, and have a DIY sundae bar.

Make a mason jar bird feeder

Pick up a poultry feeder base from your local farm store, fill a mason jar with bird seed, attach some wire, and you’ve got a great little bird feeder.

You can find mason jars in bulk online, but I recommend looking around the next time you head out to garage sales or do an ISO (I Seek Out) post in a local resale group. I guarantee you can find some amazing glass jars for an even more amazing price!
