New York Governor Kathy Hochul calls for stricter border controls and comprehensive immigration reform due to concerns about a rising number of homeless illegal migrants and asylum seekers in the state.

Establish Stricter Border Regulations

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has taken a firm stance on the need for Congress to establish more stringent border regulations.

She wants to address the influx of illegal migrants, particularly those seeking asylum, and to alleviate the challenges faced by her state.

Her concerns about the increasing number of migrants from various parts of the world who end up homeless on the streets of New York have made headlines, especially given the current immigration policies.

What Happened to the Open-Border Policy?

Hochul’s appearance on CBS’s “Face The Nation” marked a notable departure from the open-border policies associated with the Biden administration.

During her interview, Hochul criticized the recently passed congressional bill for lacking specific provisions related to border control.

“We are one of the most diverse places on earth because of our welcoming nature, and it’s in our DNA to welcome immigrants. But there has to be some limits in place.

And Congress has to put more controls at the border and not in this budget threat, shutdown threat.

Talk about eliminating positions for Border Patrol, well, we actually need to double or quadruple those numbers. So get back to work and do your jobs.”

The Need for a Bipartisan Strategy

She took a shot at Speaker McCarthy and Republicans in Congress, particularly those from New York, who have been vocal about the migrant issue but have not collaborated with President Biden to devise a comprehensive and bipartisan strategy to address border security effectively.

The governor’s call for a limit on who can cross the border reflects her belief that the current border situation is too permissive, with individuals arriving from all corners of the world and invoking the need for asylum.

Many Migrants End up Homeless

A significant consequence of this situation is the increasing number of migrants who end up homeless on the streets of New York, posing a considerable challenge for the city.

Hochul emphasized the urgency of imposing controls at the border and rejected the idea of eliminating Border Patrol positions, as suggested in budget discussions.

On another occasion, during her appearance on CNN, Hochul reiterated the challenges that New York has encountered due to the migrant influx.

The Call for Help

She called for assistance from other regions to help accommodate these individuals while reaffirming New York’s commitment to being a welcoming place for immigrants.

“Well, we want them to have a limit on who can come across the border,” she said.

“It is too open right now. People coming from all over the world are finding their way through, simply saying they need asylum, and the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York and that is a real problem for New York City,” she said.

Big Shift From Her Previous Statements

Hochul’s evolving stance on border regulations marks a significant shift from her earlier statements in 2021 when she expressed a more open and welcoming attitude toward illegal migrants.

In 2021 she said, “We want people to come here…you’re welcome with open arms and we will work to keep you safe…our message to the world is: send us your people, send us the people who need the cloak of comfort that we can demonstrate….we will provide a safe haven.”

The evolving challenges associated with the migrant crisis have compelled the governor to address border security as a pressing concern.

The growing public and political discourse on border security and immigration policies continues to shape the national conversation and the strategies adopted by state and federal authorities.
