The U.S. Army has made a historic decision to overturn the convictions of 110 Black soldiers, including 19 who were executed, for a mutiny in a Houston military camp a century ago. Here’s the full story.

In a significant move, the U.S. Army has decided to overturn the convictions of 110 Black soldiers, including 19 who were executed, for their involvement in a mutiny at a Houston military camp a century ago.
Jim Crow

This action is part of an effort to rectify the harsh punishments imposed during the Jim Crow era, which were fueled by racial discrimination.
Racist Violence

The soldiers in question were members of the Buffalo Soldiers, a regiment sent to Houston in 1917 during World War I to guard a military training facility. Tensions flared between the regiment, made up of Black soldiers, and white police officers and civilians, resulting in the tragic death of 19 individuals.
“Fundamentally Unfair”

The Army Board for Correction of Military Records, at the secretary of the Army’s request, undertook a thorough review of the cases. The board discovered “significant deficiencies” and deemed the proceedings “fundamentally unfair.”
Honorable Discharges

Consequently, all convictions were unanimously recommended to be set aside, and the soldiers’ military service is now characterized as “honorable.”
“Wrongly Treated”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Dragon Images
Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth emphasized that this action acknowledges past mistakes and aims to correct historical inaccuracies. Wormuth stated, “After a thorough review, the Board has found that these Soldiers were wrongly treated because of their race and were not given fair trials.”
Eligible for Compensation

The correction of military records will extend to recognizing the soldiers’ service as honorable. Additionally, families of the soldiers may be eligible for compensation.
March Into Huston

The roots of this historic decision can be traced back to August 1917, when the Buffalo Soldiers, part of the all-Black Third Battalion of the U.S. Army’s 24th Infantry Regiment, marched into Houston amid racial provocations.
Camp Logan

Their mission was to guard Camp Logan, a military training facility under construction for white soldiers destined for service in France during World War I. The prevailing Jim Crow laws in the city heightened tensions.
Varying Accounts

Historical accounts vary, with law enforcement characterizing the events as a deadly and premeditated assault by the soldiers on the white population.
White Mob

Image Credit: Shutterstock / hristopher Lyzcen
However, historians and advocates argue that the soldiers were responding to what they perceived as a white mob approaching them. In the aftermath, 110 out of 118 soldiers were found guilty in what became the largest murder trial in U.S. history.
Secret Executions

Image Credit: Shutterstock / thanun vongsuravanich
Tragically, 19 soldiers were executed, with the first executions occurring secretly a day after sentencing. These events prompted immediate regulatory changes, preventing future executions without review by the War Department and the president.
Benefits Available

The families of the soldiers now have the opportunity to seek benefits through the U.S. Army Board for Correction of Military Records.
Historical Injustice

The decision by the U.S. Army to overturn these century-old convictions is a long-awaited acknowledgment of historical injustices.
Racial Discrimination

Image Credit: Shutterstock / VAKS-Stock Agency
As the records are corrected and the soldiers’ service is recognized as honorable, this move marks a step towards rectifying the impact of past racial discrimination within the military justice system.
Can’t Fix Past Wrongs

Image Credit: Shutterstock / ShotPrime Studio
The news led to a lot of controversy online, with many speaking out in favor of the soldiers. One user posted “No matter what the army does now they can never change the past wrongs.”

After a ban on youth attendance at the World Press Photo exhibition in Budapest, Hungary, a second Hungarian museum had restricted under-18s from viewing an exhibition with LGBTQ content.
Two Museums Under Forced Restrictions

“It is not a question of restricting artistic works” – the Hungarian government has defended a second decision to bar minors from attending a museum photo exhibition that presents LGBTQ content.
Under 18s Banned

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Xavier Lorenzo
The Hungarian Museum of Ethnography in Budapest was forced to cordon off a section of one of their most recent photo exhibitions.
No one under the age of 18 will be allowed to enter.
New Rules Instated

The exhibition was titled ‘Indians. Souls. Survivors,’ created by Brazilian-Hungarian photographer Claudia Andujar.
It opened in mid-September, and though there were no age restrictions initially, the new rules were established last week.
Entry Restriction

‘Indians. Souls. Survivors’ is a 1967 photo series, and one work (entitled ‘Homosexuality’) depicts two shirtless adult men touching one another’s shoulder.
Next to the work was a sign indicating that only adults can view this section of the exhibition.
Controversial Law Passed

A law was passed in 2021 under Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his nationalist government which could criminalize the promotion of homosexuality to anyone under the age of 18.
This is the law that has led to the imposition of restrictions in two Budapest museums over the past month.
Many Groups Speak Out

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Drazen Zigic
The law was met with fierce criticism by LGBTQ and human rights organizations both inside and outside of Hungary.
The European Union also spoke out against the decision.
The EU Steps In

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Studio Romantic
The European Parliament accused the law of breaching “EU values, principles and law,” and Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, called it “a disgrace.”
World Press Photo Exhibition

The newest ban comes after Laszlo Simon, the director of the Hungarian National Museum, was fired for failing to enforce an age restriction ban on the World Press Photo exhibition in Budapest, one of the most prestigious annual international photography events.
Museum Director Refuses

The museum director told the Hungarian government that he “cannot legally enforce” the under-18s ban.
The issue revolved around a photo series of an elderly LGBTQ community in the Philippines, photographed by Hannah Reyes Morales. Simon was fired for failing to follow “legal obligations” to the Hungarian government.
Chief of Staff Denies Accusations

Last week, a government conference was held by Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, to address the recent decisions around museum exhibitions and accusations of censorship.
Not a Question of Artistic Censorship

“It is not a question of restricting artistic works but specifically content promoting homosexuality, which should not be made available to minors,” Gulyas said in an adamant denial of government censorship.
Definition Is Too Ambiguous

However, several organizations have argued that the Hungarian government has not presented an adequate definition of what constitutes “promotion” of homosexuality, and this ambiguity is having a negative run-on effect.
No Positive or Neutral Representation

Luca Dudits, a board member of the Hatter Society, an LGBTQ rights group, said, “You are increasingly unlikely to see LGBTQ people portrayed in any positive or even in a neutral light in the media [in Hungary].”
Heartstopper

Museums are not the only institutions that have been affected by the 2021 law.
In July this year, the Hungarian retailer Lira Kiskereskedelmi Kft was fined over 30,000 euros for selling the British book ‘Heartstopper’ without a foil cover. The book depicts homosexuality amongst minors and is targeted at a young adult readership.

Pope Francis responds to a request for clarity on whether transgender people can be baptized, serve as godparents, or act as wedding witnesses in the Catholic Church.
Church Leaders Request Clarity on Transgender Issues

Bishop José Negri from Santo Amaro, Brazil, reached out to the Vatican to request further guidance on whether transgender people had the right to “participation in baptism and weddings.”
The Pope Calls for Trans Inclusion

Pope Francis said that such participation by trans people should be allowed, acknowledging that “current universal canonical legislation” does not exclude transgender or queer people from being involved in these events.
Trans People Can Be Godparents, Says Pope

He clarified that in addition to being invited to be baptized and serve as witnesses in a wedding, trans people could also be named as godparents during official christening ceremonies.
Pope Still Warns of Decisions Causing Scandals

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Gladskikh Tatiana
The Pope warned church leaders to use “pastoral prudence” whenever possible to prevent the “danger of scandal” in their congregations.
Queer Groups Cheer Announcement

Around the world, LGBTQ advocacy groups are celebrating the news out of the Vatican.
GLAAD Speaks Out in Support of the Pope

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, released a statement praising the Pope’s announcement.
The Pope’s “Latest LGBTQ Affirmation Sends a Message”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Foxy burrow
“Pope Francis’ latest LGBTQ affirmation sends an unequivocal message to political and cultural leaders around the world to end their persecution and exclusion of transgender people,” she wrote.
Pope Is “Calling on Global Leaders” to Include Trans People

Ellis said that the Pope is “continuing to break down barriers that have kept LGBTQ Catholics away from full participation as members of the Roman Catholic Church and is instead calling on global leaders to create welcoming spaces for LGBTQ people.”
Pope Francis’ Historical Support of LGBTQ Community

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Jacob Lund
This is not the first time that Pope Francis has called for inclusion of LGBTQ people in the church. In 2013, he acknowledged gay priests for the first time, saying that he had no intention of judging them.
“Who Am I to Judge?”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Mikhail Azarov
“If they accept the Lord and have goodwill, who am I to judge them? They’re our brothers,” he said.
“We Have to Find a Way” to Encourage Parental Support, Says Pope

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Ekateryna Zubal
Referring to parents with queer children, the Pope gently called for acceptance. “We have to find a way to help that father or that mother to stand by their [LGBTQ] son or daughter,” he said to Argentine newspaper La Nacion.
Vatican’s Recent Take on Gay Unions

More recently, Pope Francis responded to several cardinals who asked him to weigh in on homosexual marriage and unions. While holding the church’s position that marriage is for one man and one woman, he made space for the acceptance of some gay unions.
Blessings OK for Gay Unions, Just Do Not “Transmit a Mistaken Conception of Marriage”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Mix and Match Studio
“Pastoral prudence must adequately discern whether there are forms of benediction, requested by one or more persons, that do not transmit a mistaken conception of marriage,” the Pope wrote.
“The Life of the Church Runs on Channels Beyond Norms”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Anatoliy Karlyuk
He suggested “pastoral charity” be extended on an individual basis. “The life of the church runs on channels beyond norms,” he said.
Conservatives Unhappy With Pope’s Positions

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Yeti studio
Conservative Catholics have been critical of Pope Francis’s affirming positions on the LGBTQ community, as well as his takes on other social justice issues.
Pope Warns Against Letting “Ideologies Replace Faith”

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Riccardo De Luca – Update
The Pope responded to that by dismissing those conservatives as “backward,” suggesting that they were more focused on ideology than faith. “Doing this, you lose the true tradition and you turn to ideologies to have support…ideologies replace faith,” he said.

In 2016, Danica Roem’s life was worlds apart from politics, selling kabobs upstairs in Arlington, Virginia. Her vivid self-description paints a colorful picture: “a five-foot-eleven, long-haired brunette metal-head trans lady reporter…screaming obscenities behind the wheel of her ’92 Dodge Shadow America.”
Defying Expectations

Roem’s recent victory marks her fourth consecutive win, taking her from a former journalist and heavy metal singer to a respected state Senator.
Transgender Rights in the Political Arena

Annise Parker of the Victory Fund underscores a key takeaway: “Equality wins elections — not culture war scare tactics.”
Virginia’s Political Realignment

The Virginia electorate showed a marked disinterest in Republican candidates, particularly those focusing on contentious issues like abortion. This resulted in a Democratic majority in both state chambers, signaling a significant shift in voter preferences.
Progressive Wins Across the States

This trend wasn’t isolated to Virginia. Ohio and Pennsylvania witnessed landmark progressive victories, indicating a nationwide shift towards more inclusive and progressive policies.
Unfazed by Hate: Roem’s Campaign Challenges

Roem’s campaign was an uphill battle against a flood of anti-trans rhetoric and negative campaigning. Yet, her unfazed demeanor and focused campaign strategy separated her from the controversy.
Confronting Hostility With Dialogue

Facing a deluge of hostile campaigning, including the release of her personal number, Roem chose to engage rather than retaliate. This approach not only diffused the hostility but also demonstrated her commitment to open, constructive dialogue.
Roem’s Grassroots Approach to Success

Her campaign strategy was grounded in a simple yet effective principle: “Always run like you’re running for mayor.” This approach, focusing on local-level engagement and grassroots campaigning, was a key factor in her success.
Roem’s Unique Background

Roem’s journey is anything but conventional. From touring with her metal band and ranking parking lots for overnight stays, her life experiences have equipped her with a unique perspective, far removed from the typical political trajectory.
An Unconventional Path

The revelation that Taylor Swift has performed in 20 NFL stadiums this season surpasses the visits any NFL player will make throughout the entire season. Now, the statistics are suggesting that her romance with one player has put him “On the map.”
Kelce’s Football Stardom

Travis Kelce, a highly acclaimed four-time first-team All-Pro tight end, stands as one of the eminent figures in his position, but he’s started making the headlines for a very different reason.
Iconic Presence of Patrick Mahomes

Aside from the quarterback maestro Patrick Mahomes, Kelce is a prominent face in the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty, which has secured three Super Bowl appearances and emerged victorious in two of them over the past four seasons.
Swift’s Impact on Kelce

Adding to his already illustrious NFL career, Kelce’s stardom received an unexpected boost due to rumors linking him romantically with the pop sensation Taylor Swift.
“‘Put Kelce on the Map”

The trend suggesting that Swift ‘put Kelce on the map’ resonated with sports fans and even caught the attention of fellow pro athlete Julius Randle from the NBA.
Expert Insights From Brendan Kaminsky

Brendan Kaminsky, the founder of Bknown, a sports social media analytics agency, provided valuable insights into the impact of Swift’s association on Kelce’s online presence.
Surge of Followers

Kelce experienced an astonishing surge of over 860,000 followers within a week after Swift’s presence supporting him at Chiefs games.
A Remarkable Milestone

This surge propelled Kelce towards the remarkable milestone of surpassing four million total followers.
Brotherly Success

Remarkably, the surge in followers was not limited to Travis Kelce alone; even his brother, Jason Kelce, a player for the Philadelphia Eagles, gained significant followers owing to Swift’s influence.
Comparison With Fellow Players

In stark contrast, during the same timeframe, no other NFL player gained over 37,000 new followers, a sign that points to Swift for Kelce’s surge.
Kelce Dominates the NFL’s Top 100

By combining the Instagram growth of the NFL’s top 100 list, it became evident that Kelce’s rise surpassed all other players on this prestigious list.
Even Kaminsky admitted he “Blew them away.”

The surge in followers was not confined to Instagram; substantial gains were also observed on X, finally reaching over 1 million followers thanks to Swift’s help.
Comparing Kelce’s Growth With Celebrities

Kelce’s growth rate even outpaced that of Taylor Swift herself.
The global mega-celebrity boasts over 270 million followers on her Instagram.
Forget the Football!

Kaminsky admitted that the spike had nothing to do with Kelce’s talents on the field, “The fact that this isn’t about something that Travis Kelce has done at all on the football field, it isn’t about any accomplishments, it’s simply for being him and who he’s dating.”
Analyzing the ‘Perfect Storm’

Kaminsky termed this phenomenon as a “perfect storm,” a rare confluence of sports and pop-culture audiences fueled by the immense popularity of Kelce and Swift.
What’s Next for Taylor and Travis?

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Mix and Match Studio
Kaminsky pointed out that Swift doesn’t follow anyone on social media, “She doesn’t follow one person on Instagram,” he said, “So let’s say she decided to follow Travis Kelce.”
The Swift Influence Is Massive

The natural step in any relationship is to follow each other on Instagram, right?
Kaminsky argued this would cause an even bigger spike “So I think if she decides to follow Travis Kelce, I think that’s going to lead to a lot of discovery for him and another big spike,” he said.

The summer of 2023 was the hottest on record by a wide margin. But September’s heat wave broke new ground in making climate scientists sweat. Here is the full story.
A Brand New Record

All through the summer of 2023, scientists around the globe watched and reported on temperatures that seemed to climb every day. By the end of August, the season had claimed a new 3-month record.
No Shiny Trophies

Only this record didn’t come with a trophy or kudos from world leaders.
Instead, the sweltering summer of 2023 came with catastrophic floods, devastating wildfires, melting ice caps, and choking droughts.
Just Getting Started

But if scientists thought the worst was behind us, September served notice that Mother Earth may just be getting warmed up.
Not Even Close

According to the latest numbers from the Copernicus Climate Change Service in Europe, September was another record-setter. And it pretty much embarrassed the previous champ.
Blink of an Eye

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Roman Samborskyi
Just 3 years ago, the coronavirus-laden summer of 2020 produced the hottest September ever.
But the ninth month of 2023 topped that mark by nearly a full degree.
Scientists Are Nervous

It’s alarming enough that the dubious record lasted just 3 years, scientists say.
But it’s the complete trouncing of the previous number that really has them nervous.
Setting New Standards

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Ground Picture
Copernicus’ deputy director, Samantha Burgess, says that new temperature records usually surpass the old marks by just a few hundredths of a degree.
The September “victory” was a couple of orders of magnitude bigger than that.
Still Not Done

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Mix and Match Studio
And summer doesn’t seem to be ready to loosen its grip quite yet, either.
Burning Leaves?

Image Credit: Shutterstock / New Africa
All across the United States and Europe, warmer than normal temperatures continued into October.
Many regions stayed in the 90s Fahrenheit, and others were 10-30 degrees above normal.
Hot Down There

It’s not just a summertime phenomenon, either, as South America and Australia have been relative hotbeds the last several months, too.
No Relief in Sight

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Dean Drobot
Coming out of what should have been their winter season, those continents may be in for some spicy days ahead as they move into spring and summer.
A Year to Remember

All of this bad climate news has 2023 poised to become the hottest year on record, surpassing 2016.
No Doubt About It

“It’s looking like it’s a virtual lock,” says Kim Cobb, an environmental scientist at Brown University.
Double the Trouble

Both 2016 and 2023 were fueled by a warm El Niño water pattern in the Pacific.
Couple that with man-made factors like carbon emissions, experts say, and you get the kind of self-feeding cycle we’re seeing now.
More Where That Came From

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Dean Drobot
The El Niño conditions are expected to carry over into at least part of 2024, so there may not be much if any relief in sight.
When Life Gives You Lemons…

Burgess says that the bright side to all this would be if it serves as a wake-up call to government leaders around the world.
Make Lemonade Fast!

Image Credit: Shutterstock / Tirachard Kumtanom
Changes need to happen fast in order to slow down or reverse the ravages of global warming that have caused so much destruction in the last few months.
And The Wall Is Melting

“The writing is so clearly on the wall,” she says. And now is the time to start erasing, before it’s too late to do anything about it.
